Well, Carl's a labrador and Fitzpatrick is a standard poodle, but they do both have roots back in the northeast, so there's a possible relation. A bio for Fitzpatrick will be coming soon!
More questions: How exactly are different dog breeds maintained in this world? Do they mate primarily with others of the same breed? If so, does that mean that things such as racism exist? And if not, wouldn't they soon "degenerate" back into the original dog form (the kind that first evolved from wolves before the separate breeds were created), which is what would happen to dogs in the real world if the artificial selection would stop? And since wolves have been seen to also be intelligent humanoids, how do they fit in all this? What about other canines (jackals, coyotes...)? Or species closely related to canines, such as vulpines?
There are a lot of mixed-breed families, but much like in our world, the older generation tended to marry within their breed while the younger generation is more likely to mix and match.
It's not a perfect world though. There is still prejudice, though it's less between breeds and more between species of canine. Riley is even himself guilty of such prejudice at first, as seen in Chapter 02. Carl is quick to refer to the under-appreciation of wolves in contemporary culture, though FreshEyes turns out to be somewhat of a bad example, being as kooky as he is. There is also a jackal character to be introduced in coming chapters as a protagonist, though I can't tell you too much about him just yet.
So the Canine Race is comprised of wolves, coyotes, jackals and dogs, (mostly) living in harmony and occasionally having hybrid kids. Oddly though there are no foxes or tanuki or such, though it's hard to say why. Most just chalk it up to a quirk of evolution.
I never noticed until now how similar Carl and Fitzpatrick look...
ReplyDeleteA future plot point perhaps?
